Student Research Opportunities
Tips for Undergraduate Students
If you are a student interested in getting involved in our lab's research, please read this before applying. We only have the personnel and resources to train a handful of students every year. I strongly suggest students follow these guidelines when contacting me to ensure a competitive application:
- You may have received advice to mention particular publications that you found interesting in your email. Unfortunately, with AI tools it is easy to fake interest without actually reading the paper (using AI tools as tutors to help understand the scientific literature is fine, but using them as a substitute for understanding is highly problematic). As a mentor I am less interested in what drew you into my lab than what you want to get out of my lab. For example, is there a particular concept or skill you would like to learn?
- State your career plans after graduation. Are you planning on applying to PhD programs, Medical School, Industry?
- Don't forget to attach your CV with your current GPA (if you are a Freshman, it's ok to list your high school GPA).
